FASHION-

Fashion in the 90's was very casual, comfortable, but trendy. Boys were known to wear Khaki pants, stylish sweaters, and polo shirts. Girls wore stylish dresses, jeans, and tank tops; cardigans made a come back as well. Flares and bell-bottom jeans were also a hit. The decade started out with bright colors but toned down to pastels towards 96 and beyond. People liked to shop at the trendy Old Navy, Gap, and Abercrombie&Fitch stores. 90's fashion was never stable and many styles came and went, but the latest fashion is always hip.

MEDIA-

  1. O.J. Simpson: Was accused of murdering his ex-wife and her boyfriend, this trial went on for months on end, and it had the whole country tuned in. He was acquitted however and set off a whole controversial issue against O.J. Simpson.

  1. Oklahoma City Bombing: In 1995, the federal Building exploded, killing 168 people and injuring hundreds of other people, including young children. Timothy Mcveigh and Terry Nichols were the prime suspects. It was another devastating piece of news that frightened the country. The bomb exploded in a car and took out half of the building. It's a scary sight to see; knowing that so many innocent people lost their lives for no reason. This made the country weary about security and paranoid about terrorism.

  1. Princess Diana and Mother Teresa: In 1997, Princess Diana was killed in a Paris car crash. She was a wonderful person and when she died, the whole world mourned her death. A few weeks later, Mother Teresa would die as well. She was worshipped by many people and took part in Princess Diana's charity projects. They were both loved for their generosity and love for the poor and outcast. The world is not the same without them.

  1. President Clinton and Monica Lewinsky: President Clinton was involved in one of the biggest White House scandals in the history of the country. He was accused of having an affair with a White House intern, Monica Lewinsky. He was taken to trial to get impeached for his actions, but the trial blew over and Clinton retained his job as President. Needless to say, it was a huge embarrassment for America.

  1. Columbine: In 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold walked into Columbine High school, and shot and killed 14 of their classmates and one of their teachers. This devastating event swept the country into paranoia about the safety of our schools. After the incident, schools all around the country received bomb threats and hit lists. The country will never forget that horrible day and now high schools have to expand their security to make sure copycat crimes don't occur.

  1. JKF Jr.: In 1999, JFK Jr., his wife, Carolyn, and his sister-in-law, Lauren, were flying in a private plane on their way to a wedding. The next morning this plane was reported missing and a week later they were discovered. The news devastated the country once again, as America lost their Prince.

  1. Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa: Sosa, form the Chicago Cubs, and McGwire, from the St. Louis Cardinals, hit the most homeruns in baseball history. Their recent count is Sosa at 66 homeruns and McGwire at 70 homeruns. The race is still on to see who can beat those scores.

  1. Tony Gywnn: Gywnn ahs a place in the baseball hall of fame. Hitting over 3,000 balls. He is now the first man to hit this many baseballs in a season.

  1. Nancy Kerrigan and Tanya Harding: Harding's husband and bodyguard were accused of injuring Kerrigan. This incident happened a couple of days before the Olympics were to start. Harding was accused of hiring her husband and bodyguard as hit-men to hurt Kerrigan. As a consequence Harding was suspended from figure skating.

  1. Aggressive sports: Aggressive sports have grown in our generation of teenagers. Sports such as aggressive in-line, skateboarding, BMX, etc. tournaments such as the

X-games and Winter-X show the world how these sports have increased. Many parents do not approve of these sports, because they limit the areas of skating or biking.

LIFE STYLE-

1. Traffic: As America's population grows, there are more people driving, and this causes a major traffic problem. People have to now turn to other ways of transportation, other than driving alone to work or school, they could car-pool or take the bus.

2. Fast Food: These restaurants have become a person's diet. In a person's busy life, they have no time to cook for themselves and they turn to fast food. Restaurants such as McDonals, Jack in the Box, and Taco Bell has increased by population because of commercials and advertisements.

3. Computers: Today the computer is a way of life. Most families own at least one computer in their home. We use computers for business, education and for Internet access. The Internet has exploded in these last couple of years. Soon computers will control the whole American system.

  1. Television and Video games: TV ahs taken the eyes of the younger generation. Children and teens watch hours and hours of TV everyday. These children spend more time in front of a TV, rather than going outside of the house and playing with their friends.

SOCIAL TRENDS-

  1. Teen Pregnancy: Teen pregnancy is very common these days. Teenagers as young as 12 and 13 years old are becoming parents, when they are not ready to take on the responsibility. As a result to teen pregnancy abortion and adoption rates have risen to great heights.

  1. Anorexia and Bulimia: Men and Women are extremely obsessed with thinness. In order to become pretty they believe that they need to be thin. Thinness is also advertised on television. For example, the Calista Flockheart controversy about her being anorexic.

  1. Drug and Alcohol abuse: Drugs during the 90's has become a great problem for teens. There are many different kinds of drugs that teens can very easily get a hold of, like, marijuana, heroin, cocaine, and ecstasy. ARTS-

  1. Latin Music: Latin Music has made a big impact on the people of the 90's. I think this Latin craze all started when Selena came out with her soft and soulful hits, then in 1998-99, everyone started to feel the vibrant sounds of Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias, and Jennifer Lopez. These artists helped us to shake our bon-bon and find the rhythm divine, in the 20th century.

  1. Pop stars and Teen Idols: Boy bands, Teen idols, and Pop stars, such as `N Sync and Britney Spears have received a lot of Criticism during the past year, because they are accused of being fake, one-hit-wonder. Needless to say, they are what all the teenagers want and that's why they sell so well. They are loved because of their good looks or nice voices, and these performers have helped us to find the teeny-boppers in all of us.

  1. Art: Art in the 90's is not only amusing, but it's controversial, I say that because I think that the big face in this slide is very funny. But the other two pictures aren't. I don't think that slamming someone else's beliefs, is a good form of art, like this one of the Virgin Mary. In today's society, anyone can make something up and put it in a museum, people will love it, and they will hate it, it just goes to show that anything can be art in the ninety's.

  1. Death in the music industry: The music industry suffered a number of great losses in the 90's. When Selena, Tupac Shakur, Christopher Wallace a.k.a. Notorious B.I.G., and Frank Sinatra died, it brought great sorrow to everyone around the world. These stars were loved by so many people, that when they died, their listeners felt something die in them too.

  1. Rock and Hip-Hop: Rock and Hip-Hop, have also become a big thing of the 90's. Artists such as Puff Daddy, Jay-Z, and Lauryn Hill have made hip-hop hotter than ever. Rock and Hip-hip were separate kinds of music, but in the 90's, they have fused their sounds together, and made a new kind of music, For example Method man and Limp Bizkit. This is significant in the ninety's because new bridges were built in the music industry. Anything can happen in the ninety's because we are so open to change and new things.

  1. Dr. Kevorkian: During the 90's we have seen more of Dr. Kevorkian helping people kill themselves. This man has brought a lot of conflict to our society. People, who are fatally ill, call him and ask him to help them die, many people approve, and many more people say it's a crime and it's wrong.

  1. AIDS: In this century, AIDS and HIV have affected many people. In this picture there are children who have AIDS and no parents because their parents died of AIDS. This is one of the biggest tragedies in our country; these kids have to suffer because their parents made the wrong choice. So many people have unprotected sex, and they get AIDS because of it, and it's just a waste of their life.

  1. Health: Many people today are very concerned about how their body looks and if they are healthy. Now days you see a lot more people working out and exercising. I think that it is good, as long as you do it the right way. Some people get obsessed about how their body looks and they try to lose weight the wrong way, like becoming bulimic or anorexic, and that's when you become unhealthy. Many teenage girls are known for having an eating disorder, because our society today puts too much emphasis on being skinny, and it is hurting the lives of our youth.
